The Yaesu FT-891 is a very compact mobile and portable transceiver for all shortwave bands and 6 m. The receiver is designed as a triple super (FM: double super) and thus enables very good values regarding sensitivity and large signal behaviour. A 3 kHz rooftop filter is fitted as standard and ensures good close selection. With the TCXO, which is also factory-fitted, the transceiver achieves a frequency stability of ± 0.5 ppm.

In the IF, the FT-891 is equipped with a powerful 32-bit signal processor (DSP). This makes the purchase of expensive crystal filters unnecessary; almost any filter width can be set depending on the operating mode. Furthermore, this DSP also provides effective noise reduction and notch functions (automatic and manual). As known from the big Yaesu transceivers, a "Contour" and an "Audio Peak Filter" (APF) are offered, which considerably improves the intelligibility in many cases.

A CAT interface for controlling the transceiver is provided via the USB socket. For digital modes, the usual eight-pin mini DIN socket "RTTY/DATA" and an external interface are used. In addition, there is the usual Yaesu tuner/linear socket, so that existing accessories can also be operated with the FT-891. The ATAS-120A mobile antenna can also be used with the transceiver. The antenna connection is a PL socket; for convenient matching of other antennas, the new FC-50 automatic tuner is offered. Alternatively, the weatherproof FC-40 for end-fed wires also fits. Other connections are available for REM/ALC, a Morse key and an external loudspeaker.

Application Description FT-891

The FT-891 offers operation on all shortwave bands from 160 to 10 m including 60 m as well as on the 6 m band. The transmit power is 100 W in SSB/CW and 40 W in AM. The operating modes are SSB (USB/LSB), CW, AM and FM. Due to its small size, the radio is particularly suitable for installation in a vehicle, but can also be used at home or as a portable radio. The front panel can also be mounted remotely with the YSK-891 option.

The high operating comfort of the FT-891 all-mode transceiver is ensured, among other things, by the large and easy-to-read LC display. A large tuning knob and a multifunction knob, together with the pop-up menus, ensure quick and clear operation. Three keys on the front panel can be freely assigned according to the user's wishes. A multi-coloured display at the edge of the screen shows the current status (squelch, transmission).

As with most Yaesu mobile transceivers, the FT-891 supports the ATAS-120A mobile antenna. This allows you to quickly set up a convenient system for worldwide mobile communication. Among other things, a handheld microphone MH-31A8J is included in the scope of delivery. The external FH-2 keyboard can be connected for convenient frequency input.

With a width of 155 mm, a height of 52 mm and a depth of 218 mm as well as 1.9 kg, the FT-891 is very handy and yet not too small. The power supply of 13.8 V / 23 A is possible with a mains adapter, but also by battery mobile or on a field day or expedition.
